Here in Fayette County, we have kitties of many different breeds. While there isn’t as much deviation in shape between different breeds of cats as there is in dog breeds, feline breeds can have very distinctive traits and appearances. We’re not going to even attempt to say which is the cutest; they are all charming and lovable, and all make excellent pets. Nor can we promise that your kitty will act according to breed characteristics. Upbringing and experience tend to be the dominant factors when it comes to your furball’s personality, so we wouldn’t be surprised to learn your kitty acts nothing like her breed. If there is one thing we can say for sure about cats, it’s that they like to play by their own rules. That said, Kitty’s breed may have some influence on those charming character traits she displays.

Here is a very basic overlook at some of the breed groups.

Longhaired Breeds

Longhaired cats are very beautiful. That silky, fluffy fur and those big bushy tails are quite fetching. Maine Coons are inquisitive, and make adorable little chirping sounds when they meow. The elegant Persians are often quiet lap cats, while Himalayans love to cuddle. Regal Birmans and the easygoing Ragdolls are also popular longhaired breeds. The rugged Norwegian Forest cat is quite self-sufficient, but mild-mannered. Then there’s the Turkish Van, which is unique in that they like swimming!

Shorthaired Breeds

There are many different shorthaired cat breeds, and it can be tricky to tell them apart. Shorthaired kitties come in an amazing variety of colors. American Shorthairs alone can come in any one of 80 different color combinations. The Bombay, on the other hand, is almost always black. Russian Blues have a dusky, blue-grey coat, while the talkative Siamese typically is of a tan color, with darker ears, paws, and tail. Felines of mixed or unknown breeds are often referred to as the Domestic Shorthair, which is not an official breed, but is the most popular type of cat in the U.S.

Hairless Cats

Hairless cats are becoming more and more popular. These felines are just as lovable as kitties with fur, and many hairless cat owners report that their four-legged friends are extremely intelligent and affectionate. The Sphynx, Peterbald, and Ukrainian Levkoy are a few examples of hairless breeds.

Here at Animal Care Clinic, we do advocate adopting cats from shelters or rescue groups, but you may be surprised at how easy it can be to find a specific breed of cat up for adoption and in desperate need of a good home.
