Does your kitty seem a bit lazier than usual lately? Summer can be pretty hard on Fluffy, so she often decides to take it easy when it gets really hot. Actually, the heat isn’t just uncomfortable for cats: it can also be very dangerous for them. A Lexington, KY vet offers some advice on keeping your feline buddy cool and content in this article.
Water, Water, Water
The most important thing is to make sure that your pet always has access to clean water. You may want to set out more than one water bowl, especially if you have more than one furball, a large home, or multiple levels. Fluffy may also appreciate a kitty water fountain.
Shelters
Next on the list? Shelter! Fluffy really is safer inside, in rooms with fans or air conditioning. If you do let your feline friend go outdoors, make sure she always has access to shade and shelter.
Brushing
Cats are pretty good about keeping their fur clean, but that doesn’t mean Fluffy can’t use a little help. Brushing your kitty daily will remove dead hair and dander from her coat. This will help her keep cooler.
Cool Beds
Making sure your furry buddy has cool, comfy napping spots will go a long way towards keeping her content and purring. You can put a cold towel down in Fluffy’s bed, or point a fan at it. Another option is to make your kitty her own little hammock bed. Just cut a piece of fabric into a rectangular shape, and attach it to the legs of an end table or coffee table. Then, tell your cat not to sleep in it. She’ll immediately hop in!
Treats
Ice cream isn’t really a suitable snack for Fluffy, but there are some other things you can give her. Freeze squeezable cat treats or small pieces of a pate-style kitty food for your feline pal. Or, make her a tuna snow-cone by combining tuna juice in water with ice in a blender. A chilled bowl of sodium-free broth is another good snack.
Parasite Control
Fleas, ticks, and worms can make your cute pet horribly sick. Keep up with Fluffy’s parasite prevention, as well as any vaccines your vet recommends.
