April is Canine Fitness Month! Physical activity is just as important to our canine companions as it is for us. However, while puppies are furry, four-legged bundles of zoom, older dogs don’t have that kind of stamina. As your pooch ages, he’ll go through some changes, and he’ll definitely run out of steam more easily than he used to. You’ll need to make some adjustments to Fido’s doggy workout schedule. Walks
Walks are likely going to be Fido’s main form of activity. You may find that you really enjoy spending this time with your furry friend. What better way to relax than by taking a stroll with a senior dog? Just let your pup pick the pace, and take him in when he starts to seem tired.
Swimming
Swimming can be wonderful for older dogs! It offers a great cardio workout, without putting any strain on his bones or joints. If Fido likes swimming, then by all means indulge him! Just be sure to take proper precautions. Never leave your four-legged friend in (or even near) the water unattended, and don’t take him swimming when it’s cold out. You’ll also want to pick places that are shallow, easy to get in and out of, and do not have strong currents, heavy wakes, or steep drop-offs.
Playing
Fido won’t be as frisky or energetic as he once was, but he’ll still enjoy playing. Keep an eye on your furry buddy, and take care not to overexert him. If he starts to look tired after a few rounds of Fetch, end the play session and just let him rest.
Tips
Slips and falls can be very dangerous for senior dogs. Always pick a spot that offers good traction and a soft surface for your canine buddy’s playtime. A lawn or carpeted area is a good option. You’ll also want to start looking for toys made specifically for older dogs. Some of these may be softer on Fido’s mouth. Others will light up or make noise. Finally, consult with your vet about the amount and type of activity your pooch needs. Every pooch is different!
