Did you know that dental problems are extremely common among our canine companions? Fido can develop a variety of issues, such as abscesses, infections, and cracked or broken teeth. Gum disease is also quite prevalent in dogs. As is always the case with our furry friends, it’s much better to prevent an issue than to try and treat it after the fact. A Lexington, KY vet lists some ways to keep Fido’s teeth healthy below.
Brushing
Brushing is just as beneficial for our canine buddies as it is for us. You’ll need to get your dog used to the idea, so start slow. At first, just gently massage your dog’s teeth and gums with your finger. Offer Fido treats, ear scritches, and praise to help him form a ‘pawsitive’ opinion of the process. Slowly start to incorporate pet toothpaste and a doggy toothbrush. Be sure to only use products made for pups!
Inspections
Keep an eye out for signs of trouble. Some of the most common ones include bad breath, excessive or ropy drool, tartar buildup, and bloody smears on toys or dishes. Fido may also give off a few behavioral clues. He may take longer eating, dribble food, or start preferring softer foods and treats. He may also act grumpy and/or withdrawn, or lose interest in play. Dental issues aren’t much of a mood booster for either people or pets!
Water
Fresh water is important for many reasons, but it’s also crucial to your furry pal’s dental health. Make sure Fido always has fresh water. Drinking clean water not only keeps your pooch hydrated, it will also rinse food particles away.
Checkups
Just like people, dogs should have their teeth checked by a vet at least once a year, starting at age one. You’ll also need to contact your vet if you notice any of the issues we’ve noted above. Keep in mind that the point here is not to give your pup a perfect, blinding-white smile. It’s to correct issues that can cause pain, infection, and/or other issues.
Chew Toys
Did you know that chewing is actually beneficial for our canine pals? It keeps Fido’s jaws strong, and also helps stimulate the flow of saliva. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
